Dear Parents, Guardians & Supporters of Double Six Youth Club

SUBSCRIPTIONS (ENTRY FEE FOR SESSIONS)

Firstly, it is with regret that we have to announce that the cost of attending each session at Double Six will be increasing from 50p per session to £1 per session. As I’m sure you are aware, the cost of everything seems to be going up and Double Six is no more immune from rising bills than anyone else. We hope that all those who attend will still find Double Six to be affordable and fantastic value. We have decided to make this price rise and maintain and improve the standard of our sessions (4 nights a week with activities, trips and a variety of facilities) rather than keep prices as they are and cut the quality and frequency of the club’s offering. In an ideal world entry would be free, but as you know the level of financial support from public services has also fallen dramatically.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

With money matters in mind, we would also like to take this opportunity to make a formal invitation to anyone who would currently describe themselves as an ‘interested bystander’ or ‘sleeping stakeholder’ in Double Six Youth Club. Please do email, visit or phone us if you’ve any desire to get involved, take on some community spirited volunteering and give some of your time to a truly worthwhile cause. For the purposes of this newsletter, we’re specifically interested in people who would be willing to orchestrate and organise revenue-raising within a new fundraising committee. Fundraising is roughly divided into two streams for Double Six: on the one hand we write funding bids for grants from pots of money like Children in Need, the Lottery and various random trusts and benefactors. On the other hand we have community fundraising which is all about the raffles, the race nights and the bucket rattling. This means that whether you’re a high-energy, enthusiastic and entrepreneurial person or the quiet, studious and sedentary type there’s a definitely a role for you within the team should you be interested. Let us know!

SPONSORED WALK ROUND LADYBOWER RESERVOIR

Having mentioned fundraising let me tell you now about a sponsored walk we’ve got coming up around Ladybower Reservoir. There will be further updates on the website and Facebook as the day approaches but it would be great if you cleared the day in your diary and started signing up those sponsors now! The walk will take place on Wednesday 23rdApril (St George’s Day) and should be an amazing event because it’s not just a Double Six thing but loads of youth clubs from all over Sheffield are taking part. All the money that we raise will go towards Double Six, minus 10% the club have agreed to donate to a children’s charity, which the children themselves can decide upon. The next page is a sponsorship form for you to use.

CLUB REFURBISHMENT

Over the summer while the club is closed the building is being re-painted, having a new kitchen fitted and generally spruced up as much as time and money allows. Can we therefore take this opportunity to appeal to our supporters to donate any building materials that are still good for the purpose to which they are intended but unlikely to be used by your good selves? If you have any such stuff lying around and would be delighted to clear the space and put it to good use – please do get in touch.

VENUE HIRE

The Double Six building is perhaps our greatest asset that we feel that could drive more revenue than it currently does. This is a part of the reason why we are investing in a refurbishment and the installation of a new kitchen. Please recommend us to any family, friends or community groups with occasions or businesses that are looking either for a large room for functions or a base to call home. The club currently hosts a popular exercise class on a Saturday morning and has an enquiry for a karate group but we are keen to expand the time when the building is alive and kicking. The Club has full disabled access, a large hall (about the size of a tennis court), a kitchen and two smaller meeting rooms.

CONSENT FORMS

One last point on my list! Whenever we organise residentials, activities, trips away or anything off-site I need the legal parent or guardian to provide their child with a signed, official consent form. There’s has been a lot of disappointed faces lately when young people have been told that an official consent form is required and a written letter or a phone call isn’t good enough. To help with this, we’re putting a blank consent form up on our website for you to print off and sign and send with your child to try and avoid any future upset. I’m sure you understand why this is important and thank you in advance for your help in this.

===

Thanks for sticking with me and reading this far. If you can provide any help I really look forward to hearing from you. The next page is the sponsorship form for the Ladybower Reservoir walk – it promises to be a really special fun day.

Fantastic news on the fundraising front. The club has been named Sainburys Archer Road's charity of the year for 2013/14. A big thank you to all their staff and shoppers who have chosen us as the pick of the local charities. We'll be sure to do you proud!

Youth worker-in-chief Richard Hay is delighted:

"I'm really proud of the fundraising committee members and so grateful that the local community have placed such faith in us. Their support will do wonders for the club. Sainsburys have set a big target for the year and that money will enable us to meet a bold vision of youth work in the area."

We took to the Saturday High Street today with a cake sale fundraiser to raise money and awareness for the plight of the Double Six youth club this morning. While their mouths were full of our delicious, sweet homemade cakes, the people of Woodseats were obliged to smile politely and listen as we thanked them for their initial contribution and attempted to persuade them to give even more for the good of the Club. Special thanks must go to ASDA Woodseats, who threw a top-notch pitch and even baking ingredients to get our money drive cooking.
